My YouTube Video – Vagabond vs 3 x Talos

With Level 5 skills, this fit worked on the date above. I only have Heavy Assault Cruiser 4
Here are some pilots who tried alternate fits – Burner Talos Kills

Mission Update:
On the last mission the first Talos that I engaged stopped targeting the drones midway through the fight and refocused Warp Scrambler and Dampener on the Vagabond. If you have turned off your MWD you might be caught by fire from all 3 Talos causing considerable damage. (didn’t need those shields anyway…)

Background:
Plenty of information on this mission and a good variation in ship types that can be used. It also seems to be the favorite for drops – unfortunately the loot fairy hates me!
I watched a few video’s that were taken at the beginning of the year and chose the Vagabond as my ship of choice. Never been a big fan of mixing guns in the Highs so I hunted around for a full 425 auto fit and found one by Illegal Wanderer. Changed this slightly by dropping the Kinetic rig for 2 x CCC to help with the Cap.

Total Ship Bounty – 21 Million Isk

The Enemy:
3 x Talos – Speed 150m/s, Warp Scramble, 1 point 32km. Sensor Damp 80km target range modifier -50%. And the killer – 413 Kin and Therm hits per second. Which normally shows as 715 damage.
Burner Talos Stats – by Chruker

Before you activate the gate:
Depending on your fit, make sure you have ammo, boosters and whatever else you need.
Do you have a full hold of drones?
Make sure your ship is not damaged and the fit is correct.
Set ‘keep at range’ to 3,000m
Set ‘orbit at’ to 4,000m
Activate your hardeners if you have them.
Get ready to activate your shield booster when you come out of warp.

On Landing:
The site consists of a cube of proximity mines (activated at around 10km) that hit for 40 every three seconds. The more you activate the more you get hit. Personally I ignore them and just fly an oblique path to the first Talos.

minefield
Post mission view of the minefield

You will arrive in the centre of the mine field with three Talos approx. 120-180km’s ahead on the outer back edge of the mine field. One left, center and right.

Chose one of the outer Talos and set a direction to it through the mine field at 90 degrees, that will fly you out of the field, then head towards the Talos but slightly off centre.
Maintain an oblique path, you will get hit initially as you pick up speed, the idea is to deny them a target by using speed and angle. I am not a gunnery guru but I am guessing this is angular velocity in motion.

Once you get within 20k’s you can set ‘orbit’ which should close the distance to 7k’s.
Release the drones, fire missiles and watch the cap.
If all goes well one or more of the Talos will target your drones.
When they do, turn off the MWD and turn on your guns.
Watch the cap, manage your shield booster and be ready for the kill.
Once the first Talos dies the others will target you again.
Pull drones, loot and move on.
Be careful here. Two Talos put out a large amount of damage which is increased when you fire up your MWD.
Kill the other two, loot and pray the loot fairy likes you.

What Happened:
The mission played out very much like the video I watched, I got in range, dropped drones and started to orbit. The drones took agro from all three Talos and I turned off the MWD to reduced my transversal and let the ammo hit hard.
Orbit Edit: Once your drones are aggro’d set orbit at 3km’s and turn off your MWD. The Vagabond takes a long time to turn. If the drones lose aggro just turn your MWD on for a few cycles. 3 to 4k’s seems to be the sweet spot. Just watch incoming fire. When the Talos starts bleeding into armor, hit approach to help scoop loot quickly.
Drone Update: I tried to do this mission with 3 drones in the bay, lost a few last time and didn’t replace them – be warned, the Talos did not aggro the drones and it was a really hard fight.
Ammo Update: I used Hail M for the first Talos and thought it was slower than my test attempt. I switched out to Republic Fleet Phased Plasma and it seemed to cut through them better.
Ammo Edit: RFPP will cut through the shields faster than Hail due to the Talos resists. I now take some Hail for the remaining 2 Talos. Hail sufferers from a 30% drop in tracking speed so RFPP is best used for the first, and sometimes the second Talos. If your drones are not aggro’d then don’t sit still.
Ammo Update 2: I am considering a Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II and using Scourge Rage. Both are cheaper and increase the dps to 613.
Fitting Update: HAML II fitted and using Scourge Rage. It works.
